So, I’m not sure if it should be called a re-opening or a formal opening as the Sawmill Market was only open for a couple of days before closing to the public because of COVID-19. It is, however, open once more and busy as ever.
While I get that there are downsides to having a booming business right next door to occupied homes, I do not see how this is at all bad for our little corner of the world. Possibilities and doors just opened to locals if you will only use a little bit of imagination and creativity.
Personally, it is beautiful to be in a place safe enough to walk around at night and also to see and feel the energy of a blossoming metropolis right in my backyard. Last night, a temporary drive-in movie theater popped-up at the new live/work condos next door. We walked by and in addition to a packed parking lot, there were flamenco dancers dressed in their beautiful gowns from the (also new and successful) Flemenco dancing school located on the bottom floor.
Even older businesses are seeing new revival such as the Ponderosa Brewing Company located in the Artisan community. Although their interior is closed to the public, their large outdoor patio area has been packed for several days to weeks now. There are still local secrets as well and I have to admit it was nice to know where to go within walking distance when the new, hip spots were full (shh, not telling).
I can’t wait until Explora and the Natural History Museum re-open. At this point, all ages will have amazing options for local fun right in our own backyard. Of course, we can not forget Old Town Albuquerque with all of its timeless charm.
What an exciting time to be a member of this community! Hazel and I feel so happy and blessed. To the owners and builders of the Sawmill Market; did you know and/or realize at the moment of inception the sheer gravity of your endeavor?
