A really efficient way to keep your website user-friendly across different markets is to add a translation plugin to your WordPress website.
Talk about an opportunity lost; someone finds you on Google but does not speak the same language and therefore solicits a competing business who has accounted for the language barrier in their digital marketing.
While many local businesses know their primary market who commonly share the same language, others do not. It is important for every small business owner to analyze his/her client base in addition to potential new clients by viewing Country demographics and/or discussing Country demographics with her website manager (especially relevant to any business frequented by tourists) in addition to thinking about the predominant languages in your own local population and if they may have a need or want for your products or services. If you yourself do not speak the language fluently, well this may cause problems for non-blogs and/or purely ecommerce, especially if you do not have a bilingual employee and/or the resources to acquire one in your bricks and mortar and/or phone sales – customer support.
While website translation may not be necessary for many small businesses, for others, it is relevant even in the start-up phase.
This was the case for a new client of mine who moved to Albuquerque, NM from Coahuila, Mexico. Not only does she have family, friends and business acquaintances still living in Mexico but she also has family and friends here in Albuquerque who prefer to speak Spanish as well.
I therefore realized, she needs her website translated to Spanish otherwise her new cooking blog and in-home cooking classes will fail to reach a large portion of her existing network.
While searching and testing various translation plugins, one integrated well in regards to her website’s existing structure without slowing it down.
We also needed simply a dual language translation (US English to Mexico Spanish) for her purposes but would like the option to expand as she travels and grows her business.
It was easy to install and customize the look and location of the translation field per several layout choices in addition to simple display options in the plugin Settings and therefore this was our best option. Here is the link to the winning Translation plugin presently working on her site:
In terms of functionality, I did recently migrate her website from one package to another, both in my own managed hosting platform, and there was an error after migration but I was able to fix it pretty easily.
I also changed out the theme as many elements did not visually work post-migration, however, I was not a fan of it for the short duration we used it pre-migration and neither was my client. This is the beauty of our website management services, unlimited changes to your website so you are never locked in.
